Buying a Coat?

What to Look for When Buying a Coat

Have you ever wondered what you should be looking for when buying a coat? Well you clicked on the right post! Below you will find useful information to enlighten you on the best materials, price and brands to keep an eye out for when choosing the best coat for your needs this season.

A few things to keep in mind when you’re looking for the perfect coat:
1. Material.

Are you looking for something super cozy and soft to keep you warm and protected in the harsh winter out on the town? Or are you an explorer who embraces the terrain? Materials like wool and polyester are great for breath-ability and locking in heat. If you’re looking to climb any mountains in the future, a coat that’s waterproof is key. The North Face is a popular brand for avid climbers. An example of a great nylon coat: Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket

Wool- good for keeping in warmth and being breathable; bad for rain and retains moisture
Cashmere- type of wool, finer and softer than normal wool and bad for rain
Gabardine- good for explorers who like to climb snowy mountains, twill fabric derived from wool and sometimes polyester, can be washed in a washing machine
Nylon- synthetic material, mostly used for outer layers of coats, good for wind and rain as long as it’s not too wet
Leather- natural material and structured like nylon, mostly stain resistant and wrinkle resistant, not vegan friendly, and doesn’t retain heat well
Cotton- normally seen as waxed cotton, great water resistant material, natural, breathable, can shrink and damage easily, heavier material, and prone to wrinkles

2. Price.

The better the material, the bigger the price tag. That’s a bit daunting, but don’t worry friend. Investing in a high quality coat that will last you several winters is a good move. These products will get you better durability when it comes to better stitching and insulation. You should expect to invest anywhere between $89 to $450 for a better quality coat.

3. Brand.

When it comes to quality and price, it’s important to look into the brand. Some brands are known for using inferior materials and practices while others make it the most important part of the process. Some great brands to keep in mind are: Columbia, The North Face, and Patagonia.
